Subject: The Passing of Dr. Eui-Soo Kim
Date: Thu, 28 Mar 2024 22:49:14 -0500

It is with great sadness that I share this information.

Our colleague, Dr. Eui-Soo Kim, a cherished friend and talented researcher
in the field of animal genetics and genomics, has recently passed away in
St. Paul Minnesota.

Dr. Kim completed his undergraduate studies in the Department of Animal
Science at Seoul National University in South Korea. Later he pursued his
master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Wisconsin. Eui-Soo
conducted research in Professor Brian Kirkpatrick's lab at the University
of Wisconsin. His doctoral dissertation, titled "Linkage disequilibrium
mapping of bovine twinning rate QTL," reflected his dedication to advancing
our understanding of genetic traits in livestock.

>From 2009 -2012, he made significant contributions in identifying selective
sweeps in dairy cattle genomes as a postdoctoral researcher at the USDA-
Agriculture Research Service's Bovine Functional Genomics Lab in

He then accepted a position as a postdoctoral research associate at Iowa
State University with Professor Max Rothschild, and continued there until
2015. His research centered on selection signals in diverse African
livestock genomes and showcased his intuitive nature, computing ability and
dedication to unravelling complex problems.

Following his time at Iowa State University, Eui-Soo embarked on for-profit
research endeavors with Tad Sonstegard at Recombinetics in Eagan, MN. As
the lead genome analyst, Eui-Soo focused on discovery of naturally
occurring sequence variants for animal health traits of economic importance
when introduced through genome editing into livestock genomes.

Though he led a quiet and unassuming life, Eui-Soo was passionate about his
research and was known for his thoughtfulness, friendliness and willingness
to help those around him.

The news of his passing is deeply saddening to his friends and colleagues.
May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.
