Cautionary Thoughts
If candidate genes are so wonderful, why do linkage mapping of QTL at all?
1) Linkage mapping does not require prior knowledge, and is relatively assumption free.
2) Given appropriate statistical design, experimental numbers, and marker distribution, linkage mapping can, in principle, identify all chromosomal regions containing a QTL, although the accuracy of a QTL map location is limited.
