Gene number is an interesting but perhaps ultra academic point. There is a good
discussion of the guestimates used to work out the number of human genes in
Fields et al Nature Genetics 7, 345-346 1994. Whether or not it is possible to
do the same calculation for an avian genome would depend on similar background
information eg total number of islands and percentage of genes with islands,
being available.
