Job Summary

A postdoctoral position is currently available in the laboratories of Drs.
Peralta, Reynolds, Oakley and Lopez-Bejar at the Western University of
Health Sciences, Pomona California USA. The project associated with this
position addresses the effects of colostrum storage and housing style on
health and welfare of pre-weaning calves in conventional and organic dairy
farms. Candidates with past experience in molecular and cellular biology,
dairy calf management, animal behavior and welfare (microbiome studies,
real time PCR, enzyme immunoassays, behavior and welfare studies, etc.)
will be preferred for this position. The candidates will be required to
design and perform experiments, generate, store and analyze data, write
manuscripts and keep the lab up and running. Interested candidates should

The project period is for up to three years dependent on performance and
interest in engaging in curricular teaching activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able
to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential

1. Detail oriented and accurate with strong analytical, project-management,
organizational, and problem-solving skills

2. Ability to work independently on assigned research project.

3. Establish and maintain good relations with other staff, faculty and
students

4. Good computer skills necessary to set up document formats in Word,
Excel, and any other software programs required by the position. Skill
using library search engines for research. Skill in using related
laboratory supplies and equipment.

Additional information:

Candidates with past experience and knowledge in microbiology, molecular
and cellular biology, and hands on experience on the following will be
preferred:

a. Microbiome studies (bioinformatics, classical/molecular microbiology
skills, including real time PCR).

b. Dairy calf management

c. Animal behavioral studies (relational studies such as hierarchical
relationships, videorecording and study of agonistic or affiliative
behaviors, environmental enrichment, or ethograms)

d. Animal welfare (assessment of affective states, enzyme immunoassays,
endocrinology of stress and welfare)

Required Qualifications

Qualifications Standard

Education: DVM or PhD in biology, veterinary medicine, animal science or
related disciplines.

The ideal candidate should be highly motivated and have strong background
in animal welfare. They should have appropriate years of research
experience to support PIs in project.

Duties of the Postdoctoral Research Associate are normally performed in a
typical life science laboratory and office setting, but also some duties
will need to be done in dairy farms. The employee is regularly exposed to
moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and must work with
toxic or caustic chemicals according to institution safety standards. The
employee may also be required to handle and collect samples from farm
animals. The noise level in this setting is u moderate due to telephone
calls, office equipment, and normal student traffic.
